Tribute to Dj Mehdi

September 15th, 2011

Tribute to Dj Mehdi, french electro dj/producer and Ed Bangers artist, who tragically died in an accident in Paris. A big lost for the French electronic and hip hop scene.

Dj Mehdi’s Tunisian Summer mix was published last week by Tsugi, the French magazine to celebrate its 200 podcasts.
Mix going from house to hip-hop and techno, where the tracks connect perfectly and are mixed in a disconcerting ease which characterises Dj Mehdi style.

tracklist at the bottom of the post.

Mehdi was one of the first to twist hip-hop into new electro shapes, making a couple of albums for Ed banger in the Nineties. He released his first full-length LP in 2002 The Story of Espion, followed by his second album, Lucky Boy, in August 2006. (more…)

In the mid-90s Paul Kalkbrenner had already decided that he did not want to be a typical DJ playing other people’s records, but rather to play only his own music, live in a club setting. His first tracks as Paul Kalkbrenner were released in 1999 on Berlin-based BPitch Control (the newly founded label from Ellen Allien) as the Friedrichshain EP, titled after his home district in the city’s east.  Paul’s third album Self (2004) would mark the beginning of a new era. His melodic sound, with its affinity for grand emotional gestures, obeyed the logic of the dancefloor, but Self introduced a narrative aesthetic, serving as a soundtrack to a film that didn’t exist (at least, not yet). “Gebrünn Gebrünn”, released one year later, became a crossover hit.
